He co-founded the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE) in 1988 and served as its Editor-in-Chief between 1994 and 1997 (two terms). During his terms, he started data mining as one of the key topic areas in TKDE and helped promote data mining as a discipline. TKDE was the first journal that published a number of key papers on data mining in the 1990s.
During his terms as the President of the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS) and as the Chair of the Task Force on Virtual Intelligence, he worked with Dr. Xindong Wu closely to launch ICDM as an IEEE-CS conference. He has been serving on its Steering Committee since 2002. He served as Program Co-Chair for ICDM 2005 and as Conference Co-Chair for ICDM 2006. He was also a driving force to launch the IEEE-CS Technical Committee on Computational Intelligence (now Intelligent Informatics) in 2002 from the Task Force on Virtual Intelligence.
Wah has published over 300 articles in various areas of computer science and engineering. He has received the IEEE-CS Technical Achievement Award, the IEEE Millennium Medal, the IEEE-CS W. Wallace-McDowell Award, the IEEE-CS Richard E. Merwin Award, and the IEEE-CS Tsutomu Kanai Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM, and AAAS.
