The morphological units are partially transparent, showing the neural structure within, demonstrating that the growth of neural structure (neurogenesis) is occuring in parallel with the growth of the body (morphogenesis). The larger internal spheres indicate neurons that are firing; the smaller internal spheres indicate neurons that are not firing. The thick rods denote connections between neighbouring morphological units. The thin rods indicate synapses connecting neurons.
