Java Web Server 2.0

Changing Ports

Documentation Contents / Documentation Index / Glossary / Administration Tool Help

If you are using the Java Web Server for development only, you will probably only need to change the default port settings if those ports are already in use by another application.

If you are using the Java Web Server for deployment, besides the issue of port conflict, you may also want to change the default port for security reasons or to reflect industry standard settings. (For a listing of industry standard port settings, see the Table of Standard Port Settings online document.)

Changing the Administration Service port

Once you have installed the Java Web Server on your system and logged in to the Administration Tool, it is recommended that you assign your Administration Service to a new port (not 9090) to provide additional security for your Java Web Server.

In particular, on a UNIX system, you may choose to install the Administration Service on a port less than 1024, as a port in that range requires special (root) privileges to access.

Changing the port can be done through the Properties button of the Administration Tool. For an explanation of the panel where this task is performed, see the Administration Tool: Properties online document.

Changing the Web or Secure Web Service Ports

You might consider changing the ports for the Web Service (http) or Secure Web page (https) service because the ports are already in use by other applications. You might also want to change them to reflect industry standard settings, thereby removing the need for people accessing those services through a browser to specifically name the port.

Changing these ports is easily done using the Administration Tool. For an explanation of the panel where this task is performed, see the Administration Tool: Network Setup online document.
